Analysing magazine mastheads from different cultures.

Kerrang magazine has a logo that shows thought the music that they include throughout their magazine as it’s bold, ‘in your face’ and unique. The music they right about is metal/rock and I think that this logo shows this well. The writing font shows that the music is sharp, hard and load. This is because of the straight edges and style of how it has been laid out, but is also all in capital letters which also is a good way of showing, as this music is loud, fast and ‘hard-core’ which is what you expect from capital letters, as it is normally linked to screaming or shouting. This gives off this effect and link between the music and logo.

Smash hits magazine is colourful and soft, showing the style of music that they show is upbeat and ‘happy’ music. The font is curved and all in lower case, compared to Kerrang this magazine is calm and ‘quieter than this, through the font you can tell what type of music the magazine is going to be writing about.

CD research.

‘Mindless self-indulgence’ I chose this Cd cover because it shows that there music is like, which is random and pretty much meaningless, but they make it into something of their own. They are a very different band, that can’t really be put under a category, which I think this CD cover kind of resembles. They have made it very plain and obvious what is on the front. I think they chose this for the CD front cover because it’s simple, and they weren’t really aiming for anything in particular, and this is what their outcome was.

This is the front and back cover of one of ‘mindless self-indulgence’ CD’s. With these they have linked the style of both of them, therefore making it stand out more but also to make it look better. The style that’s on both is very colourful and ‘random’ which the writing also links to. But linking the style in everything it makes the CD look more laid out and organised, but at the same time they have made it look vibrant and fun. I think they have done this because even though it looks random and disorganised, everything works because it has been organised. This links to their style of music because it’s random and upbeat. They have done a good job of doing this because everything links in at least one way.

Magazine research.

This college magazine features bold standard font, therefore making it easier to realise what the magazine is about, also it isn’t to over-powering which makes it appeal more to college students. This is because if something is quick and easy to read, they are more likely to read it because they are still learning, and my want something that’s easier to read. The photograph is of a college student, so the people that read this (college students) want to read it more, as it’s clear to them that this is something aimed at this particular target group. They have laid this particular magazine out so that it is cut into sections and the writing is placed onto parts of the background photo, therefore being easier to read and understand. The layout is simple, along with the writing. The heading is very visible, and shows exactly who the magazine is for, and what it’s all about.

This magazine is different from the last, as it has been made by an actual student from the city college. This magazine features a few different this that would be inside, and what information would be inside this magazine as well. This would appeal to a college student because as a student making it, they know exactly what the student wants. The layout is simple, and easy to read. The photo doesn’t over-power any of the writing, but still has a small amount of colour so that it isn’t boring. The colours all link to the logo, making there a point to them. This would be appealing to college students because the advertisement of that is inside the magazine is want a student would want, need and like to read about. Students would also read this because the information inside can relate to their college and what they need for it to, but there interests are also included. Another feature that this magazine contains is the background photo. This photo is soft and under-powering, and therefore allows you to read the font easy, but also links to the type of music that’s written about inside. So you know exactly what you getting from it.

How women are represented in '50 cent - candy shop'.

The women that are in this video are made to come across as exposed and showing a lot of ‘flesh’. The song insinuates that these girls should be doing what 50 cent is singing about, also what he is going to do to them. Some of his lyrics like ‘get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider’ and also ‘after you work up a sweat you can play with the stick’. These lyrics show that this is all that these girls are for, and what they are only used or wanted for. This makes them come across as ‘low’ and ‘degraded’ compared to the men. They have been dressed up in outfits that are highly revealing so the men essentially, as this video the man are on top, and as this is what they like, this is what they are going to get.

The girls are dressed up in colours that are reds and pinks, this is because these colours insinuates the thought of lust and sex, which is what the music lyrics is about so there is a good link between this and the music video.

The whole video was represented into 50 cent’s dream. This insinuates that this is his dream, and what he wants to happen.

Design Brief

Band name: Accidental Obsessions.

Target audience: Teenagers (15-19)
Target audience demographic –

The age range would be around 15 – 19 years of age, but are also mainly aimed at boys, but is suitable for girls as well. The other music that these people would listen to would be: rock, metal or any style of ‘dark’ music. The other interests that the audience of this band would be, for guy: Skateboarding, loud music, and have a style of dark clothing, big headphones, branded/labelled type of clothing. For a girl: Ripped clothing, netting, and dark clothing with part ‘extremely bright’ clothing or skinny jeans, so this clothing stands out more. Other interests would be considering things like BMXing and also another possibility could be going to gigs, that include ‘moshing’ with the music being metal, meaning there would be lots of movement and the people there all liking the same thing so everyone ‘getting into’ the music.

Moodboard.

For my mood board i have but may different photos of graffiti in the background, i tried to make it as colourful as possible, but tried not to let it over-power the main focus. I have chosen the middle image for the main focus because, it is the same style to the background but because it isnt the same shape, what i want to be the main focus would be easier to stand out.
